Founded in 1899, Appalachian State University is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. The campus is located in the downtown area of the town of Boone which has a population of approximately 15,000. This area of the state is a tourism attraction close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The area features both summer and winter sports and activities. Appalachian State is a member of the Southern Conference and competes in nineteen different athletic programs in the conference.
