The university was founded in 1855 by Ovid Butler as North Western Christian University. In 1875 it moved the campus to Irvington and renamed the school Butler University. Butler fields 17 NCAA teams. The university has a rich basketball tradition in a state known for basketball. Hinkle Fieldhouse which opened in 1928 was the largest basketball arena in the country from 1928 to 1971. Hinkle was the site of the final rounds of the Indiana state high school basketball tournament and was the fieldhouse in the championship game in the movie "Hoosiers". The movie was based on the 1954 championship game between Milan high School (enrollment 161) and Muncie Central High School (enrollment in excess of 1600). The Milan victory has been called "The Milan Miracle". Butler has won over 20 basketball games in each of the last 8 years and appeared in 5 NCAA tournaments during that time. The Butler Bulldogs won 2 national basketball championships, 1924 and 1929.
