Ball State University is located in Munice, Indiana and has an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students. The university traces its beginnings to 1899 when it first opened as Eastern Indiana Normal School. From 1899 to 1918 the school changed names several times and suffered financial difficulties. In 1917 two Indiana industrialists, the Ball brothers, stepped in and bought the university out of foreclosure, and in 1918 the Indiana legislature accepted the gift of the school and its campus from the Ball brothers. In 1918 the name of the college was changed to Ball State and has since that time operated as a state university. Shafer Tower was built in 2002 and quickly became the unofficial landmark of Ball Sate. The tower is a free standing bell tower. Ball State is a member of the Mid American Conference in all sports other that volley ball. The mascot of Ball State is Charlie Cardinal.
