| | | Home | | College Of Charleston CougarsThe College of Charleston is located in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The institution was founded in 1770 and received a charter in 1785 after the close of The American Revolution. This makes College of Charleston the oldest institution of higher learning in South Carolina and the 13th. oldest in the United States. The college became state supported in 1970 and since has seen a tremendous growth in faculty and student enrollment. The student body now numbers in excess of 11,000. College of Charleston is a member of the Southern Conference and the teams are known as the Cougars. The Cougars do not field a football team and are best known for basketball and baseball. They won the NAIA National Title in 1983 in basketball, and have made 4 trips to the NCAA Tournament in 94, 97, 98, 99. Their on campus basketball arena is named John Kresse Arena in honor of long time coach John Kresse.
